The Stipendium Hungaricum program is a governmental scholarship program that aims to offer scholarships and study opportunities to the citizens of certain countries outside of EU.
The countries included in the program need to have a valid bilateral educational cooperation plan signed by the Hungarian Ministry of Human Resources and the relevant ministry of the specific country responsible for education.
The scholarships are valid for studies in Hungarian state universities or state colleges in scientific fields determined in the bilateral educational cooperation plans. Programs include full BA/BSc, MA/MSc and PhD studies in Hungarian state accredited higher education institutions.
The scholarships are awarded by the Hungarian Minister responsible for education based on the nomination of the Tempus Public Foundation. The pre-selection of the candidates is carried out by the Ministry of Education of the given country or by the scholarship board appointed by that ministry.
Each and every candidate needs to take an entrance exam in order to be eligible for the scholarship program. The Hungarian higher education institution is responsible for informing the candidates about the entrance exam criteria. The selection procedure ends with the list of successful applicants being forwarded to the Sending Partner by the Tempus Public Foundation. Applicants are informed about their results by the ministry of education of the country of the applicant, or by the national scholarship office/agency.
The Tempus Public Foundation is responsible for the assessment of the scholarships. The applicant who is awarded the scholarship receives the following allowances:
  • The applicant’s tuition fee is fully covered during the entire period of the program he/she is participating in.
  • The applicant receives a monthly scholarship for the complete calendar year which is financed by the host institution. As per the current rules the sum of the scholarship is 40.460 HUF/month in case of full-time graduate programs, BA/BSc and MA/MSc programs; and 100.000 HUF/month in case of PhD programs.
  • Every participant of the scholarship program is guaranteed a place in a dormitory or, in case of lack of capacity, a sum of HUF 30.000/month covering the costs of accommodation for the whole calendar year.
  • The applicant receives free health insurance for the entire period of the program he/she is participating in.
The sender countries participating in the program are as follows: Algeria, Angola, Argentina, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belorus, Cambodia, China, Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt, Ethiopia, Georgia, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Korea, Kosovo, Kurdistan Regional Government/Iraq, Laos, Lebanon, Macedonia, Mexico, Moldova, Mongolia, Morocco, Myanmar, Namibia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, The Philippines, Russia, Serbia, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uruguay, Vietnam, Yemen.

Study programmes offered for Stipendium Hungaricum students

The Faculty of Economics offers the following academic programmes for Stipendium Hungaricum students:
BA in International Business Economics
Duration of studies: 7 semesters
Study mode: full time
Language of instruction: English
Qualification at the end of studies: Economist BA level
CURRICULUM (List of subjects)
PhD in Management and Organisational Sciences
Duration of studies: 8 semesters (the first 4 semesters: „training and research period”, the second 4 semesters: „research and dissertation period”)
Study mode: both full and part time
Language of instruction: English
Qualification at the end of studies: PhD (Doctor of Philosophy)

Admission procedure at the Faculty

Each applicant will take part in an admission audition via Skype. The interview will be coordinated by the vice-dean for the International Affairs of the Faculty. In this interview the applicant has to prove a good level of English proficiency and his/her motivation regarding the studies. The colleagues of the International Office will fix the date and time of the admission interview by e-mail. They will also send to the applicant the possible categories of the economic questions. The result of the admission audition will be sent to the Tempus Public Foundation, who will announce the applicant about it.
The BA in International Business Economics study programme will be launched for Stipendium Hungaricum students in case of sufficient number of successful interviewees (miniumum 15). In case of the PhD in Management and Organisational Sciences there is no minimum number of applicants required.

After arriving to Sopron

The Faculty of Economics has established a mentor programme for foreign students. Every foreign student is assisted by his/her Hungarian mentor-student, who provides help during the entire period of his/her studies at the Faculty of Economics. The objective of the mentor programme is to provide foreign students help in adopting to Hungarian conditions and surroundings, familiarisation with our culture, city and University.
The Stipendium Hungaricum students are expected to arrive during the registration week. The mentors contact the foreign students before their arrival, welcome them at the railway-station and accompany them to the dormitory. During the next days with the help of the mentors and the colleagues of the International Office the students will apply for residence permit at the Immigration Office, for health insurance at the National Health Insurance Fund of Hungary, for tax registration number at the National Tax and Customs Administration of Hungary, for student card and they will open a bank account.
